Seventeenth-Century
Modern
John Fiske
Sideboard designed by Philip Webb for Morris & Co. English, walnut, c. 1865.
Webb’s work often revolved around inspiration taken from 17thcentury forms. This piece is no exception, here recalling a 17thcentury court cupboard with panel construction. This sideboard is in no way a copy. Instead, we have a romantic reinterpretation of the
earlier form. Look at the skirt with its sweeping curve. Morris & Co. produced both two-bay and three-bay versions of this sideboard. Courtesy John Alexander, Ltd./JAGR Interiors, www.johnalexanderltd. com.
